Borussia Dortmund reportedly interested in Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi
Borussia Dortmund have reportedly signaled interest in taking Callum Hudson-Odoi on loan, according to multiple reports.
With the summer transfer window set to close in two days, Borussia Dortmund have ramped up efforts to get some last minute business done. The positions of interest have been mainly on the right flank, as the club have seemingly been working to bring in a right winger and right back to shore up the squad ahead of the first half of the season.
Having played three games in the Bundesliga so far, Borussia Dortmund have shown a level of inconsistency that has highlighted the need for new signings. The newest name linked to the club is Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Hudson-Odoi has been a hot topic for both Dortmund and current champions Bayern Munich in the past, with the London based club rejecting approaches for the winger on multiple occasions, as per Sky Sports. Chelsea seem very uncertain about whether or not they want to part ways with the academy product, but the player could see himself making the jump so that he can get more first team football.
According to Ruhr Nachrichten, it would seem that Dortmund would initially be looking to sign Hudson-Odoi on loan, but a sticking point in negotiations will be the winger’s wages. Hudson-Odoi currently earns around £120,000 per week, which would be a very large sum for the club to have to pay should the move go through. The negotiations surrounding the wages and loan fee will likely make or break this deal’s chances of going through.
The prospect of signing Hudson-Odoi on loan is an exciting one, considering he has shown that he has the ability to be a very creative and dangerous player in the past. As with many players already associated with Dortmund, injuries have both hampered his progress and limited his opportunities to show his talent and allow his potential to come to fruition.
Since the start of the Premier League season, Hudson-Odoi has been an unused substitute for Chelsea. And a player of his age and talent should be playing far more minutes than he currently is.
A move to Dortmund, assuming the financial details are sorted out, makes sense as he is likely to have more of a chance of making an impact in Germany than he is at Chelsea. I would also not be opposed to Dortmund negotiating a loan with an option to buy, should he become a more integral part of the squad and feel at home at the Westfalenstadion. Time will tell what the final outcome of these negotiations will be, but at least we have the prospect of perhaps watching another electric player lighting up the Westfalenstadion to look forward to.
