Borussia Dortmund internationals: Marco Reus talks return to Germany squad, Thorgan Hazard ruled out
Marco Reus is happy to be back in the Germany squad, while Thorgan Hazard is back in Dortmund after having his ankle injury examined by the Belgium national team.
Marco Reus: “It feels good to be back”
Marco Reus is back in the Germany squad for the first time since October 2019. And the Borussia Dortmund captain is looking forward to getting started under new head coach Hansi Flick. At a press conference on Tuesday, Reus said:
"“It feels good to be back. I’m happy to be here working with the new head coach Hansi Flick. The first sessions have been very positive; we have trained well and with a lot of intensity.”"
Reus, who is one of the more experienced players in the Germany squad, wants to take on more responsibility and play an important role in the team.
"“I’m one of the oldest and the captain of a club team. I want to take responsibility here too, and play an important role. I always want to be on the pitch and help the team.”"
Reus also said that despite opting out of the Germany squad for the European Championships, he never thought about retiring from the national team.
"“I just felt that a break would do me good. But I didn’t have any thoughts about retiring. That’s why it wasn’t a big question that I would be here again. We are now in the middle of a new start. I hope we have a successful future.”"
Reus could earn his 45th cap for the German national team on Thursday, as they take on Lichtenstein in the first of their three World Cup qualifiers scheduled for September. Germany are currently third in Group J, having won two and lost one of their opening three games.
Thorgan Hazard returns to Dortmund
Thorgan Hazard was named in Belgium’s squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers despite carrying an ankle injury. The winger is already back in Dortmund after having his injury examined by the doctors at the Belgium national team.
Hazard suffered his injury during Borussia Dortmund’s win over Eintracht Frankfurt, and has missed the last three games as a result. It remains to be seen whether he will be fit in time for the Black and Yellows’ trip to Bayer Leverkusen on September 11.
