Previous Meeting

Borussia Dortmund’s previous meeting with Bayer Leverkusen saw them come away 3-1 winners at the Westfalenstadion. Goals from Erling Haaland and Marco Reus put Leverkusen to the sword and brought Dortmund a comfortable win to end the season.

A win against Leverkusen on Saturday could set the tone for the rest of the month, which sees Dortmund start their Champions League group stage campaign. Getting points early on will be crucial to Marco Rose’s side’s ability to keep pace with Bayern Munich this season. The earlier loss to Freiburg has also made getting points in this game all the more important.

The previous meeting is also not a good reference point to look at what the score may look like come the final whistle. In the previous matchup, Dortmund were in the ascendency, while current form dictates that Leverkusen could pose them a much bigger threat than they did on the final day of last season.

That being said, the absence of Charles Aránguiz and Exequiel Palacios will severely weaken Leverkusen’s midfield. The likes of Bellingham, Witsel and Dahoud have all the ability in the world to assert themselves in the middle of the park and really dictate the game in Dortmund’s favor. Either way, this game is looking like it will be a spectacle to behold, particularly for the neutral viewer.
