Borussia Dortmund were able to take away all three points from Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena, but not before both teams played out a thriller of a game that ended 4-3 in favor of the Black and Yellows.

The first matchday since the international break was an exciting one for Borussia Dortmund as they visited Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena this past Saturday. Dortmund were continually pegged back by the home side throughout the game, but through sheer determination and a little bit of luck, they were able to come away 4-3 winners in one of the wildest games this Bundesliga season so far.

Borussia Dortmund were pegged back as quickly as the 8th minute after the ball was lost by Raphaël Guerreiro not too far outside the box. The ball made its way to Florian Wirtz who walked it into the penalty area with far too much ease and slotted home from close range.

The first half continued with great intensity and a flurry of chances went begging for both sides until Dortmund sprung to life in the 36th minute to make it 1-1. A useful cross from Thomas Meunier found the head of Erling Haaland and the Norwegian levelled the game for Die Schwarzgelben. Dortmund had thought they had turned the game on its head just two minutes later courtesy of a Jude Bellingham header, but the referees deemed that a foul had been committed in the buildup by Mahmoud Dahoud and the goal was pulled back.

In the 45th minute Leverkusen would retaliate, capitalizing on loose possession in their half to make it 2-1 before the break. Shortly after the break, it was Julian Brandt that would restore parity against his former club, but this too was once again short lived as Leverkusen struck back, making the game 3-2. It would take an immense amount of willpower for Dortmund to get back into the game, but they would do just that courtesy of a very finely taken Rapha free kick, and a late penalty buried by none other than Erling Haaland.

This weekend’s duel against Leverkusen did far more than secure three points for Dortmund and get fans’ hearts racing. It was a game that was full of surprises, both good and bad, that could do with a bit of analysis. Let us take a look at some of the key talking points from this game.
