After weeks of uncertainty and criticism from supporters, Borussia Dortmund finally released their cup kit for the 2021/22 season on Wednesday evening.

Borussia Dortmund released their cup kit for the 2021/22 season on Wednesday evening and the players wore it for the first time as they took on Besiktas JK in their UEFA Champions League opener. The release comes after a long delay and plenty of controversy and criticism from supporters.

The initial leak of the Borussia Dortmund cup shirt for the 2021/22 season designed by Puma did not have the club’s badge on it. That led to a lot of criticism and anger from supporters, and the club even issued a statement in May saying that the final jersey will look a lot different than the leaks.

The promise of change even led to a delay in the final jersey being ready, and so the Borussia Dortmund players had to wear the cup kit from last season for their DFB-Pokal first round tie against SV Wehen Wiesbaden last month.

The new cup kit was finally released on Wednesday evening ahead of the Champions League opener against Besiktas. The final version of the shirt does have the Borussia Dortmund badge on the front next to the Puma logo. But it is embossed, making it rather difficult to spot without looking closely.

Other than the addition of the Borussia Dortmund badge, the shirt is very similar to the leaks. There are two black stripes on the front of the neon coloured shirt with BVB 09 written in bold letters. The shirt also has the club badge on the back.

Puma released similar third kits for Manchester City, Borussia Mönchengladbach, AC Milan, Olympique Marseille and a few other clubs last month. But those kits only had club names written across the chest and not the logos. Borussia Dortmund were supposed to have a very similar kit, but fan criticism meant that the club had to ask Puma to make changes to the design.

BVB Managing Director and Head of Marketing Carsten Cramer told Sport1 on Thursday morning that they took the criticism from fans very seriously. And that prompted them to make the change.
