Jude Bellingham and Gio Reyna included in 40-man shortlist for the 2021 Golden Boy award

Borussia Dortmund duo Jude Bellingham and Gio Reyna are in the running to win the 2021 Golden Boy award after being included in the top 40 shortlist.

The list of nominations for the 2021 Golden Boy award was cut from 60 to 40 on Thursday. And Borussia Dortmund midfielders Jude Bellingham and Gio Reyna have both been included. The award is given to the best performing U-21 player playing in Europe every year.

Jude Bellingham has been nominated after an impressive debut campaign with Borussia Dortmund. He has gone from strength to strength over the last 12 months, becoming a key player for the Black and Yellows. The 18 year old has made an excellent start to the current season as well, and produced a match-winning performance in BVB’s 2-1 win over Besiktas in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

Like Bellingham, Gio Reyna has also established himself as a regular starter for Borussia Dortmund. The USMNT international has already made 69 appearances for BVB, scoring ten goals and assisting a further 11.

Bellingham is among the favourites to win the 2021 Golden Boy award, But he faces tough competition from the likes of Pedri (FC Barcelona), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich), Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid), Mason Greenwood (Manchester United) and several other talented youngsters. Two Borussia Dortmund players have won the Golden Boy award previously. Erling Haaland was last year’s winner, while Mario Götze won the award in 2011.

The shortlist will be further cut to 20 in October, and the winner of the 2021 Golden Boy award will then be announced later this year.
