Players to Watch

Jude Bellingham was the star of the show for Borussia Dortmund during their 2-1 win over Besiktas JK two weeks ago. And the young midfielder will have a key role to play once again on Tuesday, especially if Erling Haaland and Marco Reus fail to overcome their injuries in time.

It will also be interesting to see how Donyell Malen performs. The Dutchman’s start to life at Borussia Dortmund has been an underwhelming one. But he is set to start again on Tuesday, and a good performance against Sporting could be the perfect confidence booster for him.

João Palhinha has established himself as a key player for Sporting CP. The aggressive defensive midfielder played a key role in Sporting’s title win last season and also impressed for Portugal at the Euros this summer. He will be tasked with stopping Jude Bellingham on Tuesday.

Sporting CP have been struggling for goals of late, but they will fancy their chances of causing a few problems to the leaky Borussia Dortmund defence. Former Manchester City wing-back Pedro Porro has scored in each of Sporting’s last two games. And he is one player the BVB defenders will have to keep an eye on.

Previous Meeting: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Sporting CP

These two sides have met just twice in their history. And both meetings came during the group stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League. Borussia Dortmund came out on top on both occasions.

Goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Julian Weigl sealed a 2-1 win for the Black and Yellows in Portugal. While Adrián Ramos’ 12th minute strike was enough to secure a 1-0 win at the Signal Iduna Park two weeks later.
