Thomas Delaney on his Borussia Dortmund exit: “I wanted to play more”
By Tushar Bahl
Thomas Delaney has said that he wasn’t unhappy at Borussia Dortmund, but his desire to get more playing time was the reason behind his decision to move to Sevilla this summer.
Thomas Delaney left Borussia Dortmund to join Spanish side Sevilla last month for a transfer fee in the region of six million euros plus bonuses. The Denmark international was linked with a move away from BVB all summer long, and attracted the interest of a number of clubs from England, Spain and Italy. Delaney has now given his reasons for leaving Borussia Dortmund and joining Sevilla.
In an interview with Kicker, Delaney said that he was proud to have spent three years at Borussia Dortmund. But he decided to leave because he wanted to get more playing time than the club had in mind for him.
"“It (leaving Borussia Dortmund) hurt me in some ways, because I wasn’t unhappy in Dortmund. On the contrary. In the end, it was the little things that tipped the scales: I could foresee that I wouldn’t be playing the biggest role. I am 30 years old, and I wanted to play more than the club had in mind for me. That’s why I wanted to make the switch.”"
Delaney, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Werder Bremen in 2018, made a total of 88 appearances across all competitions for the club. His combative performances in the middle of the park helped him become a real fan favourite over the years.
Despite leaving the club in the summer, Delaney still follows all of Borussia Dortmund’s games from a distance. And he really hopes that the Black and Yellows can win the Bundesliga title in the near future.
"“I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope that they can win the championship in the near future. Dortmund has a lot of fantastic people on board, I can’t say anything bad about this club and the people there. I’d be really happy if there’s something for them to celebrate at the end of the season. Maybe I’ll come to Borsigplatz and join in too. (laughs)”"
Delaney has made five appearances for Sevilla since joining them in the summer. And he has set his sights on competing for titles and playing in the UEFA Champions League in the coming years with his new club.
