Borussia Dortmund receive another injury scare as Manuel Akanji leaves Switzerland camp due to adductor problems
Borussia Dortmund have received another injury scare as Manuel Akanji has left the Switzerland national team camp due to adductor problems.
It has been an international break filled with injury problems for Borussia Dortmund so far. And they were handed another scare on Saturday evening as Manuel Akanji was forced to come off in the 53rd minute of Switzerland’s World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland after complaining of adductor problems.
Switzerland have now confirmed that Akanji will not be fit to play in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Lithuania. The Borussia Dortmund defender will return to Germany to undergo further examinations and receive treatment on his injury.
Akanji’s injury further adds to Borussia Dortmund’s woes. A number of BVB players have been forced to pull out of their national team squads this week due to injuries.
Raphael Guerreiro (Portugal) and Youssoufa Moukoko (Germany U-21s) both had to drop out of their national team squads after suffering muscle injuries. It has since been confirmed that both players have torn muscle fibres.
Thorgan Hazard and Thomas Meunier also had to withdraw from the Belgium squad, but luckily it looks like they should be able to return to training next week. Erling Haaland, Mats Hummels, Mahmoud Dahoud and Gio Reyna are also working on recovering from their respective injuries.
Borussia Dortmund return to Bundesliga action next weekend as they take on Mainz 05. At the moment, it remains to be seen how many of the injured players will be fit to take part in that game.
