Bundesliga Roundup: Bayern thrash Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund keep pace at the top

Bayern Munich delivered a statement of intent with a 5-1 thrashing of second placed Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. While Borussia Dortmund kept pace with the league leaders by earning a 3-1 win over Mainz. 

Matchday eight of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season was full of goals and high octane action. Bayern Munich scored five first half goals en route to a 5-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Robert Lewandowski got the Bavarians up and running with a brace, before Thomas Müller and Serge Gnabry added three more goals over a four minute period to seal an emphatic win. Patrik Schick scored a consolation goal for Leverkusen in the second half.

Erling Haaland scored a brace and Marco Reus was also on target as Borussia Dortmund managed to earn a 3-1 win over Mainz 05. The win keeps Marco Rose’s side one point behind Bayern Munich.

SC Freiburg continued their strong start to the season as they came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig. Emil Forsberg gave Leipzig the lead in the first half, but Wooyeong Jeong’s second half strike helped Freiburg maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Wolfsburg’s slide continued as they suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Union Berlin. Taiwo Awoniyi  and Sheraldo Becker were on target for the Berliners as they climbed up to fifth place in the Bundesliga table.

FC Köln received a hammering on Friday evening, as they were handed a 5-0 defeat by Hoffenheim. Ihlas Bebou scored a brace for Hoffenheim, and Christoph Baumgartner, Dennis Geiger and Stefan Posch were also on target.

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s slow start to the season continued as they could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to a depleted Stuttgart side. Konstantinos Mavropanos opened the scoring with a stunning strike before Jonas Hofmann’s effort helped rescue a point for the Foals.

Hertha Berlin pulled off the biggest upset of the matchday as they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1. Marco Richter and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp put Pal Dardai’s side two goals ahead, before Goncalo Paciencia scored to give the Eagles a lifeline with seven minutes to go. But there was to be no equaliser, as Hertha leapfrogged Eintracht Frankfurt and moved up to 13th place in the table.

VfL Bochum climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Anthony Losilla’s 80th minute goal sealed a priceless win for last season’s 2. Bundesliga champions. Arminia Bielefeld came from behind to get a 1-1 draw against Augsburg. Reece Oxford’s first half opener was canceled out by Jacob Laursen in the 77th minute.
