Borussia Dortmund suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat against Ajax on matchday three of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

It was an evening to forget in Amsterdam for Borussia Dortmund as they were handed a 4-0 thrashing by Ajax on Tuesday. The Black and Yellows were second best in all departments, and the result could have been even worse had Gregor Kobel not made some excellent saves to deny Erik ten Hag’s side.

Borussia Dortmund are still second in their Champions League group despite the defeat. But this performance shows that Marco Rose’s side are still nowhere near competing for the top honours. Ajax were simply better and taught BVB a footballing lesson on Tuesday. And how Dortmund respond to this defeat could well make or break their season.

Borussia Dortmund actually made an encouraging start to the game but Ajax took control soon after. And the Dutch giants opened the scoring in the tenth minute as Marco Reus headed Dusan Tadic’s free-kick into the back of the Dortmund net.

Ajax then doubled their lead in the 25th minute through Daley Blind, who beat Gregor Kobel with a fantastic low strike after Borussia Dortmund failed to clear their lines. The second goal left the Black and Yellows deflated, and Ajax continued to dominate the game for the rest of the half.

Dortmund did have a chance to halve the deficit on the stroke of half time after Donyell Malen set up Erling Haaland. But the Norwegian international’s shot was rather easily saved by Remko Pasveer.

Haaland then had another chance to score two minutes after the start of the second half. But this time his shot was parried onto the crossbar by the Ajax goalkeeper.

Ajax then added a third in the 56th minute through Antony, who capped off an excellent performance by curling his shot past Kobel and into the back of the net. Sebastien Haller then headed home Ajax’s fourth goal to seal a thumping win.

Borussia Dortmund were quite simply outplayed by Ajax right from the first whistle to the last. And the defeat was certainly a well deserved one. Next up for the Black and Yellows is a trip to Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga, where they will be aiming to show a response after this heavy defeat.
