Jude Bellingham, Mats Hummels and Emre Can were all on target as Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways on Saturday, beating Arminia Bielefeld 3-1.
Borussia Dortmund showed that they can get the job done without Erling Haaland, as they beat Arminia Bielefeld 3-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday. While it wasn’t the best of performances from Marco Rose’s side, they got the job done thanks to superb goals from Jude Bellingham and Mats Hummels.
Marco Rose changed his formation to a back three to deal with his team’s latest injury crisis. Donyell Malen started up front in the absence of Erling Haaland, while Marius Wolf and Thorgan Hazard played as the two wing-backs.
Borussia Dortmund dominated the game right from the start. But it was Arminia Bielefeld who came close to scoring twice in the opening quarter of the game. A mistake in possession from Marin Pongracic presented the home side with a great double chance. But Gregor Kobel, Manuel Akanji and Marin Pongracic combined to just about prevent Bielefeld from scoring.
Borussia Dortmund were then awarded a penalty at the half hour mark when Donyell Malen was brought down inside the box. Emre Can stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent the Bielefeld goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 1-0.
Mats Hummels then doubled Borussia Dortmund’s lead on the stroke of half time, and what a strike it was! The centre-back found the bottom corner with a stunning volley from the edge of the box, leaving Stefan Ortega with absolutely no chance.
The second half was a bit of a tame affair with the Black and Yellows happy to rest on their two goal lead. But Jude Bellingham brought it to life with a sublime piece of skill in the 72nd minute. The England international dribbled past three Arminia Bielefeld defenders before dinking the ball into the back of the net. It was a truly special goal from a truly special player, who continues to get better and better every week.
Arminia Bielefeld did pull a goal back late on after Mats Hummels gave away a penalty. But Borussia Dortmund managed to get the three points to keep pace with Bayern Munich. Next up for BVB is a home game against second division side FC Ingolstadt in the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday.
