Bundesliga Roundup: Wins for Borussia Dortmund, Bayern; Wolfsburg sack Mark van Bommel

Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich both enjoyed straight-forward wins on matchday nine of the Bundesliga season. While Wolfsburg parted ways with head coach Mark van Bommel after losing to SC Freiburg. 

Bayern Munich maintained a one point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings as they cruised to a 4-0 win at home to Hoffenheim. Goals from Serge Gnabry, Robert Lewandowski, Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting and Kingsley Coman helped the Bavarians cruise to a comfortable victory.

Borussia Dortmund kept pace with their title rivals by earning a 3-1 win away to Arminia Bielefeld. Emre Can, Mats Hummels and Jude Bellingham were all on target for Marco Rose’s side, before the home team pulled a goal back late on through Fabian Klos.

SC Freiburg continued their unbeaten start to the season, as they beat Wolfsburg 2-0 away from home. Goals from Philipp Lienhart and Lucas Höler helped Freiburg move up to third place in the league table. Mark van Bommel paid the price for the defeat as he was sacked by Wolfsburg on Sunday.

RB Leipzig came from behind to beat SpVgg Greuther Fürth 4-1. Despite their poor start to the season, Jesse Marsch’s side are now up to sixth place in the Bundesliga standings.

FC Köln come from two goals down to earn a draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the Rheinderby. Quick-fire goals from Patrik Schick and Karim Bellarabi helped Leverkusen race to a two goal lead. But a second half brace from Anthony Modeste ensured a share of the spoils.

Mainz 05 returned to winning ways on Friday as they thrashed Augsburg 4-1. Jonathan Burkardt scored a brace for Bo Svensson’s side. Karim Onisiwo and Stefan Bell were also on target for Mainz, while Andi Zeqiri scored what proved to be a consolation goal for Augsburg.

VfB Stuttgart came from behind to rescue a point against Union Berlin. Taiwo Awoniyi gave Urs Fischer’s side the lead in the first half, but Wahid Faghir equalised for 10-man Stuttgart in the 93rd minute.

Hertha Berlin added to Adi Hütter’s woes by claiming a narrow 1-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Marco Richter’s first half strike sealed a vital win for the struggling Berliners. While VfL Bochum stunned Eintracht Frankfurt to earn their third win of the season. Danny Blum opened the scoring in the third minute before Sebastian Polter sealed the win in second half stoppage time.
