Marco Rose wants to help Steffen Tigges develop further at Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund won their clash against FC Köln on Saturday with help in part from Steffen Tigges, who scored his first Bundesliga goal for the club.
Saturday was a special day for one Steffen Tigges as the Borussia Dortmund striker came off the bench to score his first senior goal for the club. Tigges came on as a second half substitute and had just the impact that was necessary. He scored Dortmund’s second goal of the game with a glancing header from a corner swung in by Julian Brandt. The striker was elated to open his Bundesliga account:
“I came close on Tuesday, but it didn’t work out. As a big striker, I sometimes need to score from corners too. I’ll be smiling a little bit more for the next day or two. I’ll try to keep it that way until the preparation for the Champions League starts again.” Steffen Tigges.
Tigges’ goal sealed the win for Dortmund, but also did wonders for his personal confidence. His chances for breaking into the starting XI are generally slim when Erling Haaland is healthy, but that doesn’t mean Marco Rose doesn’t recognize his quality:
“Big compliments to my team. Steffen Tigges scored his first goal and is proud as a punch. I think that will help him and we want to help him develop further here. He is a physically strong striker and is the type of player who can best replace Erling Haaland.” Marco Rose.
Tigges was under consideration for a move to Köln in the summer, ironically enough, something that Steffen Baumgart and Marco Rose shared a laugh over in their joint press conference after the game. Dortmund were reluctant to release Tigges, and the move has proved justified at least in the confines of this game.
Rose’s willingness to continue to develop Tigges is also a welcome nod to developing players internally. While Tigges started his football career playing for VfL Osnabrück, his move to Dortmund in 2019 saw him join the club’s second team, where he continued to hone his threat in front of goal. Considering he wasn’t necessarily brought in to be a game changer for the first team, it is very nice to see him get that chance nonetheless. One can hope that Tigges continues to develop and can make an impact on the first team in a productive fashion in the weeks to come.
