Defenders: Thomas Meunier, Manuel Akanji, Mats Hummels, Marius Wolf

Marco Rose used the back three formation in the three games following the defeat to Ajax two weeks ago. But he has reverted to a back four for the Ajax clash.

Manuel Akanji has been Borussia Dortmund’s best defender this season and he will be looking to show his quality once again on Wednesday against the dangerous Ajax frontline.

Mats Hummels is slowly finding his feet after enduring a difficult start to the season due to knee problems. He will have a key role to play in Borussia Dortmund’s attempts to stop Sebastien Haller on Wednesday. Dan-Axel Zagadou is also edging closer to full fitness and played for the U-23s on Saturday. He will be on the bench against Ajax.

Thomas Meunier will play as the right back, with Marius Wolf on the left. Both players have started the season well, with Wolf earning praise from both Michael Zorc and Marco Rose for his recent performances. Wolf and Meunier will have to be at their best defensively against Ajax’s dangerous wingers.
