Marin Pongracic

Marin Pongracic joined Borussia Dortmund on loan from VFL Wolfsburg in the summer to bolster their defensive ranks, but he hasn’t really been that convincing so far.

The 24-year-old has appeared eight times so far this season but has only started five of those games. When he has taken to the field, however, he hasn’t been too impressive as he has only averaged one tackle per game and 0.5 interceptions per game. At the moment, he is a back-up option to Mats Hummels and Manuel Akanji. And his playing time will only decrease further with Dan-Axel Zagadou now fit again.

Pongracic made a decent start to his Dortmund career with a strong performance in Leverkusen. But since then, he has made a number of sloppy errors both in possession and in terms of his defensive positioning.

Pongracic may be a signing that comes into its own as the season goes on, there is definitely potential in the Croatian defender, it’s just finding the right formula to unlock it. He only has until the end of the season to convince the BVB bosses to sign him permanently. And based on his start, there is a lot of working to be done.
