Borussia Dortmund are said to be one of the clubs interested in signing Denis Zakaria, who could be available on a free transfer next summer.

Denis Zakaria’s future has been the subject of a lot of speculation over the last few months. The Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder has been linked with a number of clubs, including Juventus, AS Roma and Arsenal. According to reports, Borussia Dortmund are also keen on signing the 24 year old.

Borussia Dortmund could be in the market for a new defensive midfielder next summer if Axel Witsel leaves the club. The Belgian international’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and he is reportedly attracting the interest of Juventus. At the moment, it remains to be seen if the BVB bosses are planning to offer Witsel a new contract.

With Zakaria’s contract also expiring at the end of the season, the Swiss international could be a replacement for Witsel. However, the competition for his signature is very high. And Borussia Mönchengladbach aren’t giving up hope of extending his contract either.

Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl believes that they still have a chance of keeping Zakaria at the club. “We’re not without a chance,” Eberl told Kicker. “It’s a lot of work, but I’m up for it.”

Zakaria is enjoying an impressive season with Gladbach, and has scored two goals in nine league appearances for the club. One of those goals came in the Foals’ 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in September.

Zakaria has played under Marco Rose before, and that could prove to be an advantage for the Black and Yellows if they are actually interested in signing him.
