Raphael Guerreiro missed Borussia Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League group stage clash against Sporting CP due to muscle problems. And he remains a doubt for this weekend’s trip to VfL Wolfsburg.

Borussia Dortmund received a big blow minutes before their UEFA Champions League group stage match against Sporting CP on Wednesday, as Raphael Guerreiro had muscle problems during the pre-match warm-up and could not take part in the game as a result.

Nico Schulz replaced Guerreiro in the starting XI just minutes before kick-off. The 28 year old had a game to forget as he gave the ball away before the first goal, and was then substituted at half time. Emre Can, who replaced Schulz for the second half, was then sent off in the 74th minute. Borussia Dortmund went on to suffer a 3-1 defeat and were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League as a result.

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc gave an update on Guerreiro’s injury on Thursday. He confirmed that there is no muscle tear, but did not give much hope of the Portuguese international being available for this weekend’s Bundesliga clash against VfL Wolfsburg.

"“He experienced some muscular problems. We’ll have to see – it’s already Thursday – whether he’ll be fit in time for Saturday.”"

Guerreiro only just made his return to the team last weekend after being sidelined for more than a month with a torn muscle fibre. He has endured a difficult time due to injuries this season. And the hope will be that his latest injury does not keep him out for too long.
