Football clubs across Germany will only have a maximum of 15,000 fans in stadiums as the government has announced new restrictions to deal with the latest COVID-19 wave.

Germany’s national government and state officials have made the decision to limit the capacity of stadiums in the country to 50%, with a maximum of 15,000 fans allowed for Bundesliga games and other outdoor events.

A number of other measures have also been announced, including a return of the 2G rule which means that only people who are either vaccinated against or have recovered from COVID-19 will be allowed into Bundesliga stadiums. And ghost games, or games behind closed doors, will also take place in areas with high infection rates.

The measures have been announced as Germany deals with the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Germany recorded more than 73,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

Borussia Dortmund already announced the cancelation of all tickets that had been sold for their game against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. They were hoping to have around 26,000 fans at the Signal Iduna Park for this weekend’s Bundesliga topspiel. But now Dortmund will only have 15,000 fans at the stadium on Saturday. The club have confirmed that new ticket sales will start on Friday.

Previous measures allowed Borussia Dortmund to have 67,000 fans at the Signal Iduna Park for their home games.
