Lennard Maloney: “I would love to be selected for the USMNT. Their spirit inspires me”

BM: Let me ask you about your family background, you are a US passport holder and you made your debut in the 2018/19 season with the United States U-20s team against Jamaica, can you see yourself playing for the USMNT?

LM: What can I say? Of course, I am waiting for it! I would love to be selected.

BM: Which American players do you admire? Are you in touch with USMNT coach Greg Berhalter and any of the players from the United States team?

LM: I talk quite regularly to Terence Boyd, I admire him as a player, we keep in touch. Also John Brooks is a footballer whose career I have followed for a long time. What inspires me about the USMNT though is the spirit, it’s the collective, the US team set-up is special and it’s something I aspire to be part of for sure.

BM: Your father was in the United States military and you grew up in Germany, which part of the US do you have family? Did you spend a lot of time in the US growing up?

LM: My family in the United States are based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, I have been a bunch of times but I don’t get over as much as I would like to due to the schedule here with Borussia Dortmund, it’s a long way for just a week’s break but I enjoy keeping in touch.

Next. Four players who left Borussia Dortmund too soon. dark

BM: Well, I’ll be excited to see you playing for the USMNT and hopefully at a major tournament like CONCAF Gold Cup or a FIFA World Cup qualifier soon. The way BVB U23s won the title last season, losing only one game, all season is a total inspiration, good luck with ‘Die Amas’ in 3. Liga.

LM: You are welcome, thank you.
