Bundesliga Roundup: Bayern win controversial Der Klassiker, Freiburg hit six past Gladbach
By Tushar Bahl
It was another weekend full of goals in the Bundesliga, as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker while SC Freiburg put six goals past Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Bayern Munich benefited from some controversial refereeing decisions on Saturday as they came out on top against title rivals Borussia Dortmund. Fans were treated to another enthralling clash between Germany’s top two clubs, but it was referee Felix Zwayer who ended up deciding the contest.
Dortmund took the lead early on through Julian Brandt, but Bayern responded immediately and levelled the scores through Robert Lewandowski. Kingsley Coman then gave Bayern the lead going into the break, but Marco Rose’s side responded brilliantly in the second half. Erling Haaland scored the equaliser before the Black and Yellows were denied what looked like a clear penalty. Bayern were then awarded a penalty of their own, which Lewandowski buried to seal a 3-2 win.
SC Freiburg delivered the biggest shock of the weekend as they earned an incredible 6-0 win away to Borussia Mönchengladbach. It was a truly stunning performance from Christian Streich’s side, with Maximilian Eggestein, Kevin Schade, Philipp Lienhart, Nicolas Höfler, Lucas Höler and Nico Schlotterbeck all on target in the first half alone.
Bayer Leverkusen were also in fine goalscoring form as they cruised to a 7-1 win over a hapless Greuther Fürth side. Patrik Schick netted four second half goals for Gerardo Seoane’s side, after goals from Amine Adli, Edmond Tapsoba and Piero Hincapie had given them a 3-1 lead going into the break.
Union Berlin claimed an impressive 2-1 win over RB Leipzig, with Jesse Marsch paying the price for the defeat. Taiwo Awoniyi and Timo Baumgartl were both on target for the Berliners, and Leipzig made the decision to part ways with Marsch after the defeat.
Wolfsburg’s misery also continued, with Mainz 05 handing them a 3-0 defeat. Jonathan Burkardt and Anton Stach scored in the first five minutes of the game for the 05ers, before an own goal from Maxence Lacroix made sure of the three points.
VfL Bochum continued their impressive run of form to move up to tenth place in the Bundesliga standings. They enjoyed a 3-2 win over FC Augsburg. Goals from Sebastian Polter (x2) and Gerrit Holtmann gave last season’s 2. Bundesliga champions a two goal lead, before Michael Gregoritsch and Daniel Caligiuri scored to help Augsburg cut the deficit to just one goal. But Bochum held on to claim the vital three points in the end.
TSG Hoffenheim made it four wins out of five as they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2. The Eagles actually took the lead through Rafael Santos Borre, but Dennis Geiger, Georginio Rutter and Diadie Samassekou all scored to help Hoffenheim turn the game on its head. Frankfurt pulled a goal back through Goncalo Paciencia, but Hoffenheim held on for the win to stay fifth in the Bundesliga standings.
Stevan Jovetic scored a brace as Hertha BSC came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against VfB Stuttgart in Tayfun Korkut’s first game in charge. Omar Marmoush and Philipp Förster had earlier given Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side a two goal lead, before Jovetic scored twice to ensure a share of the spoils. FC Köln and Arminia Bielefeld played out a 1-1 draw, with Bryan Lasme cancelling out Salih Özcan’s opener.
