Bundesliga games will once again be played behind closed doors after the winter break as Germany deals with the latest wave of Covid-19 cases.
Politicians in Germany have decided that all major sporting events in the country must be played without any spectators in stadiums starting from December 28. The decision will also have an impact on the Bundesliga, and games will be played behind closed doors after the winter break. It remains to be seen how long this regulation will last for.
The Bundesliga is currently on a winter break, and the second half of the season is set to get underway on January 07. Borussia Dortmund’s first game of the rückrunde will see them travel to Eintracht Frankfurt on January 08.
A maximum of 15,000 fans were allowed into stadiums in some states prior to the winter break. But now all teams will have to play their matches without any fans in stadiums once again.
The end of the 2019/20 season was played without fans in stadiums. And almost all games from November onwards were also played behind closed doors last season. The decision to move back to ghost games has been made in a bid to fight the spread of the new Covid-19 variant Omicron in the country.
The return of ghost games will have a big impact on the finances of football clubs. Borussia Dortmund suffered losses of four millions euros per home game when Bundesliga matches were previously played without spectators. And the hope will be that the Covid-19 situation eases up soon, so that fans can be allowed back into stadiums once again.
