As the Bundesliga takes a winter break, we take a look at how the Borussia Dortmund players fared during the first half of the season.

Borussia Dortmund’s first half of the season was hardly an ideal one. Their injury ravaged squad exited the UEFA Champions League at the group stage, and also ended the hinrunde nine points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings.

The BVB defence was especially hit by injuries. And the Black and Yellows managed to keep just six clean sheets over the hinrunde as a result. Here we take a look at how the Borussia Dortmund goalkeepers and defenders fared during the first half of the season.

Gregor Kobel (8/10)

A few question marks were raised when Borussia Dortmund decided to sign Gregor Kobel from VfB Stuttgart for a fee of 15 million euros in the summer. But the Swiss shot-stopper answered his critics in excellent fashion. Not only did he make several spectacular and match-winning saves during the first half of the season, but he also showed that he has all the tools to succeed as a sweeper keeper who is also comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Barring that one error against Bochum, Kobel hardly put a foot wrong. And the signing of the 24 year old certainly looks like a steal for Borussia Dortmund.

Marwin Hitz (5/10)

Hitz was called upon just three times over the course of the first half of the season. He did not always look comfortable in goal, but did a fairly okay job in the end.
