Borussia Dortmund would like a decision on Manuel Akanji’s future to be made by spring, with talks over a new contract already underway.

Manuel Akanji has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s top performers so far this season and did a really good job of leading the defence over the course of the hinrunde. His contract is set to expire at the end of next season, and the BVB bosses want a decision on his long-term future by spring.

According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Borussia Dortmund and Manuel Akanji are already in talks over a new contract. And the Swiss international faces an important decision about his future in the coming months.

Akanji has earned a lot of praise for his performances in recent months, including from legendary Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. So there will be no shortage of interested clubs if he decides to take on a new adventure. If he decides not to sign an extension, Borussia Dortmund will likely be forced to sell him in the summer in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer in 2023.

Akanji joined Borussia Dortmund from FC Basel in January 2018 and has established himself as one of the mainstays in defence over the years. The 26 year old has made a total of 144 appearances across all competitions for the Black and Yellows.

Akanji’s defensive partner Dan-Axel Zagadou also faces a tough decision regarding his future in the coming months. The Frenchman’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season. The hope at Borussia Dortmund will be that he can stay injury free and earn a new contract with the club.
