Mahmoud Dahoud back in training ahead of Hoffenheim clash
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund received a big boost on Thursday as Mahmoud Dahoud made his return to training after recovering from his back problems.
Mahmoud Dahoud’s absence was heavily felt on Tuesday as Borussia Dortmund crashed out of the DFB-Pokal at the hands of second division side St. Pauli. The midfielder missed the game due to back problems. But according to Ruhr Nachrichten, he could be back in the squad for this weekend’s game against TSG Hoffenheim after he was able to take part in Thursday’s training session without any problems.
Dahoud has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s standout performers this season. And he has also scored in both of Dortmund’s league games since the turn of the year. So having him back in the starting XI on Saturday would certainly boost the Black and Yellows’ chances of getting the three points away to TSG Hoffenheim.
Axel Witsel started in the number six role in Dahoud’s absence against St. Pauli on Tuesday. But the Belgian international had a game to forget as Borussia Dortmund suffered a shock 2-1 defeat that ended their DFB-Pokal defence.
Borussia Dortmund will have to make do without Emre Can (muscle injury) once again this weekend, while Gio Reyna (training backlog) will also have to wait until after the upcoming international break to make his return to the matchday squad.
Borussia Dortmund find themselves six points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings heading into matchday 20 of the season. Hoffenheim are currently fourth, nine points behind Marco Rose’s side.
