Roman Bürki to stay at Borussia Dortmund after failed Lorient move on transfer deadline day

Roman Bürki looks set to stay at Borussia Dortmund at least until the end of the season after his proposed move to FC Lorient fell through on transfer deadline day.
Roman Bürki was heavily linked with a move to FC Lorient on transfer deadline day, and an agreement had already been reached between the two clubs according to multiple reports in both Germany and France. But the transfer did not materialise in the end and the out of favour goalkeeper now appears set to stay at Borussia Dortmund at least until the end of the season.
It is unclear why Bürki turned down a move to Lorient. L’Equipe claim that the 31 year old was interested in joining the French side initially, but then changed his mind. While Blick report that there simply wasn’t enough time for the two parties to reach an agreement on transfer deadline day.
Bürki fell out of favour at Borussia Dortmund last season, and now finds himself behind both Gregor Kobel and Marwin Hitz in the pecking order for goalkeepers. He hasn’t played for the Black and Yellows since the end of last season. And the chances of him wearing the BVB shirt again are improbable at best.
Bürki still has 18 months left on his Borussia Dortmund contract. There was hope that he would be able to find a new club during the January transfer window. Galatasaray and FC Lorient both showed concrete interest in signing the Swiss shot-stopper. But both moves fell through in the end. And Bürki will now in all likelihood have to wait at least six more months to play his next competitive game.
