Transfer deadline day roundup: Borussia Dortmund miss out on Denis Zakaria; Aaron Ramsey joins Europa League opponents Rangers
Transfer deadline day saw reported Borussia Dortmund target Denis Zakaria join Juventus. While Rangers strengthened their midfield with the signing of Aaron Ramsey.
Another eventful (or uneventful if you ask Borussia Dortmund supporters) transfer window is in the books. The January transfer window saw teams across Europe’s top leagues splash out big money to bolster their squads. And some big name players were on the move, especially on what was a chaotic deadline day.
Juventus sign Borussia Dortmund target Denis Zakaria
Borussia Dortmund have missed out on the signing of Denis Zakaria, with the midfielder joining Juventus from Borussia Mönchengladbach. Reports in Germany claimed last month that the Black and Yellows were interested in signing Zakaria on a free transfer at the end of the season. But Juventus swooped in and signed the Swiss international for a fee in the region of 5 million euros plus bonuses.
Borussia Dortmund will now have to turn their attentions elsewhere as they look for a long-term replacement for Axel Witsel.
Former Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joins Barcelona
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined FC Barcelona on an 18 month contract, leaving Arsenal on a free transfer. The former Borussia Dortmund striker fell out of favour at Arsenal and now joins Barcelona after an eventful transfer deadline day.
Aubameyang and Barcelona could face Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Europa League knockout rounds this season.
Borussia Dortmund’s Europa League opponents Rangers sign Aaron Ramsey
Speaking of the UEFA Europa League, Borussia Dortmund’s knockout round play-offs opponents Rangers have signed Aaron Ramsey from Juventus. The experienced midfielder joins the Scottish champions on loan with an option to buy.
Despite his recent struggles at Juventus, Ramsey is a quality player and a proven game-changer. And Borussia Dortmund will have to keep a close eye on him when they face Rangers later this month.
