Mats Hummels looks set to miss Borussia Dortmund’s crunch Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen, as the defender is dealing with an infection.

Borussia Dortmund return to Bundesliga action this weekend and a crunch Bundesliga clash awaits them against Bayer Leverkusen. Games between these two teams usually feature a lot of goals. And the Black and Yellows will likely have to make do without a key defender on Sunday, with Mats Hummels expected to miss the game.

According to BILD and Sport1, Hummels is dealing with an infection and will not be able to face Bayer Leverkusen as a result. The 33 year old has been ever-present in the Borussia Dortmund defence in recent months, so his absence against Leverkusen will be a big blow to Marco Rose’s side.

Dan-Axel Zagadou appears to be the likeliest option to replace Hummels and partner Manuel Akanji in the Borussia Dortmund defence. The Frenchman has come off the bench in each of the last two games, and also played for the U-23s in their 2-2 draw against VfL Osnabrück last weekend. Marin Pongracic is the other defensive option available to Marco Rose.

BILD add that Erling Haaland is also expected to miss the game against Bayer Leverkusen due to muscular problems. Sebastian Kehl spoke about the Norwegian international’s injury status on Tuesday, but refused to confirm whether he would be available to play on Sunday or not.
