Borussia Dortmund player ratings from embarrassing 5-2 loss to Bayer Leverkusen
Mahmoud Dahoud (4/10)
When compared to Axel Witsel, Mahmoud Dahoud offers much needed dynamism and quick proggresive passes that can be converted into goals by attacking players. These traits were nowhere to be seen against Leverkusen as Dahoud formed a sloppy midfield trio alongside Jude Bellingham and Julian Brandt. Other than a few shots from outside the box, the German international did little to impose himself on the game. He was also nowhere to be seen as Leverkusen ran through the Dortmund midfield at will.
Jude Bellingham (4/10)
Being as responsible as Dahoud for the stability of the team, Jude Bellingham wasn’t able to salvage the sinking Dortmund ship either. He was often sloppy and lost possession of the ball in areas where it would have just been better to clear it up the field. While the BVB defense was poor, part of it had to due with the fact that the midfield offered no assistance whatsoever any time Leverkusen crossed the middle of the park.
Bellingham did create a great chance for Gio Reyna in the 82nd minute, but wasn’t able to influence the game much other than that.
Julian Brandt (5/10)
Brandt delivered a great cross into the Leverkusen box which resulted in an own goal and helped Dortmund get back into the game. Brandt’s constant movements off the ball and the carries from side to side made him look like the only one capable of hurting the Leverkusen defense. But he also made some poor decisions and looked careless on the ball at times, especially in the second half.
