Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Niklas Süle, with the Bayern Munich defender set to join on a free transfer in the summer.

Borussia Dortmund have made their first summer signing, with Niklas Süle set to join the club on a free transfer when his contract with Bayern Munich expires at the end of the season. The defender will sign a four year contract with the Black and Yellows

FC Barcelona, Chelsea and Newcastle United were also said to be interested in signing Süle. But he decided to join Borussia Dortmund in the end. Sebastian Kehl said that Süle has a great desire to play for BVB, and he will add plenty of experience to the team’s back-line.

"“Niklas has shown us in our talks that he has a great desire to play for Borussia Dortmund. He has a lot of experience, composure in build-up play and the necessary physicality to take the next step together with us from the summer.”"

It has long been reported that Borussia Dortmund will look to bolster their defence in the summer transfer window. BVB have been linked with a number of centre-backs in recent weeks, including Nico Schlotterbeck, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Andreas Christensen.

The contracts of Manuel Akanji and Mats Hummels are both set to expire at the end of next season. While Dan-Axel Zagadou’s contract is expiring at the end of the current season. With the trio’s futures still uncertain, it is no surprise that the BVB bosses have acted so quickly in the transfer market.

The hope will be that Süle’s arrival will stabilise the Borussia Dortmund defence that has conceded 36 goals in just 21 Bundesliga games this season. Süle has won four Bundesliga titles, the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal since joining Bayern Munich from TSG Hoffenheim in 2017.
