Thorgan Hazard was left out of Borussia Dortmund’s squad for their trip to Union Berlin for performance related reasons.
Thorgan Hazard did not travel to Berlin with the Borussia Dortmund squad for Sunday’s game against Union Berlin. The Belgian international’s surprise absence led many to believe that he may have suffered an injury in training. But apparently, he was dropped from the squad for sporting reasons.
According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Hazard’s absence from the Borussia Dortmund squad was purely a sporting decision made by Marco Rose.
The BVB head coach made it clear after the 3-0 win over Union Berlin on Sunday that the forward is not injured, and hinted that he was left out after failing to make a good impression on the training pitch.
"“I simply discussed with the coaching team which squad we should take with us. We decided on the guys who imposed themselves in training during the week.”"
It remains to be seen whether Hazard will return to the Borussia Dortmund squad for the first leg of their UEFA Europa League knockout round play-offs tie against Rangers on Thursday.
The 28 year old has made a total of 22 appearances across all competitions for the Black and Yellows so far this season, and has five goals and one assist to his name. He started in the 5-2 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, but was subbed off at the hour mark.
Borussia Dortmund also had to make do without Erling Haaland, Thomas Meunier (both muscular problems) and Gio Reyna (illness) on Sunday, but managed to come away with a crucial 3-0 win over Union Berlin. Marco Reus scored a first half brace, before Raphael Guerreiro sealed the win in the second half.
