Axel Witsel’s contract with Borussia Dortmund is set to expire at the end of the season, but the midfielder is not too concerned about his future at the moment.
Axel Witsel is facing an uncertain future at Borussia Dortmund, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season. Reports have claimed in recent weeks that he is unlikely to get a contract extension. But the Belgian international is not thinking too much about his future at the moment.
Witsel was asked about his future on Wednesday during the pre-match press conference ahead of the first leg of Borussia Dortmund’s UEFA Europa League knockout round playoffs tie against Rangers.
"“It is true that I’m in a unique situation but that is not a topic for today. I’m focused on training and the games that lie ahead. It’s important for me to finish the season well and then we’ll see.”"
Witsel began the season as a regular on the Borussia Dortmund team-sheet, but has lost his spot in the regular starting XI in recent weeks. The 33 year old has struggled to recapture the form he showed when he first arrived at BVB, with his lack of pace proving to be costly for the side on a number of occasions.
Marco Rose did recall Witsel to the starting XI for the Bundesliga clash against Union Berlin on Sunday. The defensive midfielder did a solid job in Berlin and helped Dortmund keep a clean sheet. And he will now be looking to build on that performance in the coming weeks.
Witsel joined Borussia Dortmund from Tianjin Quanjian in 2018, and has made a total of 133 appearances for the club so far. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for him beyond the end of the season.
