Borussia Dortmund 6-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach: Takeaways from big win
Borussia Dortmund’s attack comes to life against Gladbach
If we’re being completely honest, after the Rangers game, I don’t think many expected Borussia Dortmund to come out and put up the attacking display that they did on Sunday. But for a team that’s been very reliant on a certain Norwegian goal machine to put away chances, scoring six in his absence on the pitch isn’t too shabby.
The main catalyst for this rout was none other than Marco Reus, who chipped in with two goals and three assists, dictating the majority of Dortmund’s attacking play to make sure his former side were on the losing end of the scoreline at the end of the 90 minutes. Reus seemed to be in the right place at the right time for entire game, showing just how much class he still has despite getting on in years.
Doneyll Malen, Marius Wolf and Youssoufa Moukoko also also played their parts to make sure Dortmund came away big winners. Malen was responsible for goal number two on the night after running onto a wonderful lobbed pass courtesy of Reus. Sommer got a hand on the ball but the shot proved too powerful for him to stop. Moukoko for his part put away Dortmund’s fourth after being introduced as a substitute. The young German youth international positioned himself perfectly in the box to receive the ball from Reus, tucking it in the bottom left corner with confidence. Wolf was also the beneficiary of Reus’ stellar form, with the captain finding his teammate in the box only for the former Frankfurt player to smash it just under the bar of Sommer’s goal for Dortmund’s third.
What I liked most about this display was that it was the complete opposite of Dortmund’s first meeting with Gladbach this season. The first meeting was a drab 1-0 loss where Dortmund offered very little going forward.
Both Moukoko and Malen in particular had improved performances and offered much more in this game. They were obviously more clinical considering the goals they scored (albeit Donny getting a little lucky), but both ended up in dangerous positions far more frequently. It will do both of them a world of good to get on the score sheet, particularly Moukoko, who hasn’t gotten as many minutes as he would have liked so far under Marco Rose.
It will also hopefully put the striker in contention for a start against Rangers in Thursday’s second leg clash should Erling Haaland not be ready for a return to the field. It is a fixture Dortmund will have to be almost perfect in should they wish to progress further into the Europa League.
