Gregor Kobel’s saves prove decisive for Dortmund

Discussing Sunday’s result would be incomplete without touching upon Gregor Kobel’s performance. While Dortmund came out big winners, it was just as much thanks to Kobel as it was to the attacking players. Kobel made some very decisive saves to prevent Gladbach from capitalizing on the chances they did have, which stopped any opportunity for them to change the complexion of the game as it went on.

Kobel has had to deal with having a much maligned defense in front of him for the most part of his short Dortmund career. He has often been called into action more than he should be in games, which was something Jude Bellingham mentioned in his Matchday Review interview.

Kobel’s saves were integral in making sure Gladbach didn’t have a sudden surge of confidence to come back and make an attempt to swing the game in their favor. A prime example of this came in the 22nd minute when a misplaced pass from Hummels led to a chance for Manu Koné. Kobel was able to smother the one on one opportunity, which underlined the fact that without him, Dortmund’s defensive woes would be far worse this season.

Final Thoughts

Borussia Dortmund’s win against Gladbach was an important one from a confidence perspective. It was an opportunity for the team to bounce back and they took it, which is great. The point we have been making all season however is that new they must build on this performance and put up a strong fight in the return leg against Rangers.

The return leg at Ibrox will not be an easy one for Die Schwarzgelben, especially with fresh injuries to contend with. They have shown however that they are more than capable of putting together a strong performance with the personnel available, so they will have little excuse not to perform this coming Thursday.
