Borussia Dortmund end disastrous week with a 1-1 draw against Augsburg
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund’s disappointing week came to a tame end as they could only manage a 1-1 draw away to FC Augsburg.
Borussia Dortmund’s woes continued on Sunday evening as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a struggling FC Augsburg side. The Black and Yellows appeared to be going through the motions for the majority of the game. And in the end, they were left frustrated by their well drilled opponents.
The result means that Borussia Dortmund now sit eight points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings, with just ten games to go in the season. And with the way Dortmund have played in recent weeks, they can certainly forget about winning the Bundesliga title this season.
Marco Rose was forced to name a much-changed starting XI, with the team’s latest injury crisis forcing his hand. The game got off to a cagey start with Borussia Dortmund happy to take a patient approach against Augsburg’s pressing.
With no Erling Haaland and Marco Reus on the pitch, Dortmund appeared to be lacking the quality required to cause problems to the Augsburg defence for the majority of the first half. That piece of quality finally arrived in the 35th minute, when Thorgan Hazard cut inside from the right wing and managed to glide his way past three defenders before firing his shot into the bottom corner.
Borussia Dortmund made a strong start to the second half. Rafal Gikiewicz tipped Donyell Malen’s effort onto the crossbar, before the Netherlands international hit the side netting. But it was all Augsburg after that, as Dortmund appeared content with their one goal lead.
But Augsburg found their way back into the game, with Noah Sarenren Bazee taking advantage of some poor defending from Borussia Dortmund to turn home the equaliser in the 78th minute.
Borussia Dortmund had a couple of half chances to retake the lead late on, but they failed to make the most of them. It ended 1-1 in Bavaria, giving Augsburg a vital point in their battle to avoid relegation. Dortmund, on the other hand, will be left to rue what was another lethargic and sloppy performance.
Next up for Marco Rose’s side is a trip to Mainz 05. And based on how things are going right now, beating the 05ers will be anything but straightforward for Borussia Dortmund.
