Jeremie Frimpong or Noussair Mazraoui? Which right-back should Borussia Dortmund set their sights on this summer?
Borussia Dortmund’s defense continues to be a source of speculation as performances at the back remain rather underwhelming for Die Schwarzgelben. These performances are a sign that change is necessary, and it seems that this time, the club’s higher-ups are finally looking to bring in reinforcements.
Over the course of the last few weeks, there has been quite a bit of name dropping when it comes to players being linked with the club. Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong and Ajax’s Noussair Mazraoui are both said to be on Dortmund’s list of targets. Both players ply their trade primarily in the right back position, a position that Borussia Dortmund find themselves ailing in once again with Thomas Meunier picking up an injury that could keep him out for the rest of the season.
Borussia Dortmund’s other players in the position of question are either equally injured (Mateu Morey) or not seen as starters (Marius Wolf and Felix Passlack). While these injuries are of course temporary and all of the players mentioned will be fit again for next season, none of these names strike me as a nailed on starter.
For all his improvement this season, Thomas Meunier is on his way into the twilight of his career, and we have no idea how Morey will progress upon his return. Because of this, Dortmund are fully justified in including the right-back position as an area that needs improving this summer.
Both Frimpong and Mazraoui are very good shouts in terms of their respective skill sets to fill the right-back position, and both have a set of pros and cons that might affect their feasibility as a signing as well as their level of impact for the club should they join. Let us take a look at some of the key points to consider should Borussia Dortmund look to sign either player in the summer.
