When it comes to signings made in the pandemic era of world football, the overall price of the whole package, (transfer fee, wages, signing bonuses, agent fees) is going to weigh far heavier on the minds of clubs looking to invest in their squads. Borussia Dortmund, like most clubs around the world, have suffered financial hardships due to the current state of affairs surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. When looking at players, the club will look to sign as many players as they can for a bargain price.

Taking a look at Frimpong first, the player joined Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021 for a fee of approximately $12 million. His current value sits closer to $22 million per Transfermarkt, and he has a contract with Leverkusen that runs until 2025. It’s clear that signing Frimpong would then be an expensive venture, with fees closer to 30 million euros being rumored to be the price at which Leverkusen would consider selling their player.

Mazraoui, on the other hand, offers equal if not more quality and would be signed on a free transfer as his contract with Ajax comes to an end this summer. A transfer for the Ajax star would make more sense if we isolate the deal simply from a financial perspective. Dortmund would be getting a quality player in a position in need of fresh legs for an overall less strenuous financial package.
