Jeremie Frimpong or Noussair Mazraoui? Which right-back should Borussia Dortmund set their sights on this summer?
Final Thoughts
The selection of appropriate transfer targets for this coming summer will weigh heavy on the minds of those in charge of building next season’s squad. It is shaping up to be the second big rebuild in the span of a few years, and the fans and club alike will be hoping that the right choices are made this time; choices that can bring the club closer to bridging the gap between them and Bayern Munich.
Full-back will of course be a major position of interest and the likes of Mazraoui and Frimpong are both intriguing names for the club to be looking at. Because both players are more attack minded, however, I don’t see either being a defensive stalwart for the side, the way Łukasz Piszczek was during his time with the Black and Yellows.
The modern idea of the full-back has however changed anyway, and both Frimpong and Mazraoui are examples of this, with both being very good at what they do in an offensive sense for their sides.

In terms of looking at the overall package, my preferences lean more towards Mazraoui, because there’s no doubt that he is a quality player, but he’ll also be the more affordable of the two. The fact of the matter is that Borussia Dortmund’s earnings won’t be as high this year as they would be in seasons past, especially due to their early exit from European competition as well as the ongoing financial constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mazraoui is also more experienced and established than Frimpong. But at the same time, he is still only 24 and can be Dortmund’s first-choice right-back for years to come. Add to that the fact that he will be available on a free transfer, and he could be a very shrewd signing for BVB if they manage to convince him to join.
Pulling off the signing of Mazraoui would be a massive financial coup for the club, and would mean that their money could go further in terms of shoring up other problem areas in the squad, which as of right now seem unfortunately plentiful.
Sebastian Kehl and co. have some massive decisions to make; decisions that will directly influence whether Borussia Dortmund can bring in the necessary amount of quality to make them more competitive on a domestic and international level as a whole.
