Michael Zorc has downplayed Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of winning the Bundesliga title despite Bayern Munich’s recent slip-ups.

Borussia Dortmund have the opportunity to close the gap to Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga standings to just four points on Wednesday. But Michael Zorc is not getting carried away, and wants the BVB players to keep focusing on their upcoming games.

In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten, the Borussia Dortmund sporting director wrote off his team’s hopes of winning the Bundesliga title this season as ‘nonsense.’

"“We don’t need to look at the table, we need to focus on our games,” Zorc said. “Two weeks ago, we were still considered by many to be the fools. Now to suddenly start talking about the championship, that’s nonsense.”"

Borussia Dortmund appeared to be down and out in the Bundesliga title race when they dropped points against FC Augsburg three weeks ago. But Bayern Munich have been held to draws in each of their last two games, and the Black and Yellows suddenly have the opportunity to climb their way back into the title race.

Marco Rose’s side are currently seven points behind Bayern Munich, but have a game in hand on the defending champions. They are set to take on Mainz 05 on Wednesday, and a win over the 05ers would cut Bayern’s lead at the top of the table to just four points.

Bayern would still be the heavy favourites to win the Bundesliga title, even if Borussia Dortmund manage to beat Mainz on Wednesday. Dortmund would need to win all nine of their remaining games this season to have even the slightest chance of winning the title. That will certainly not be easy, considering how inconsistent BVB have been this season.
