Mainz 0-1 Borussia Dortmund player ratings: Axel Witsel scores crucial late winner
By Tushar Bahl
Marius Wolf (4.5/10)
Wolf was not able to make any impact on the game whatsoever and was taken off after less than an hour, with Erling Haaland coming on to replace him.
Thorgan Hazard (5/10)
Hazard’s game was a bit of a mixed bag. He looked sharp at times but also had moments when the things he tried did not come off at all. The Belgian international did not pose much of a threat with his set-pieces either.
Donyell Malen (5/10)
After impressing in recent weeks, Malen had a bit of an off night against Mainz. He worked hard for the team but wasn’t able to get involved in the game. His second half shot that nearly resulted in a throw-in summed up his performance.
Erling Haaland (5/10)
Haaland had a fairly quiet cameo, but still managed to test the Mainz goalkeeper. He came closest to scoring for Dortmund before Witsel’s winner, but the Mainz goalkeeper managed to parry his effort away with relative ease.
Gio Reyna (N/R)
Reyna came on for the final 20 minutes of the game and showed some really good glimpses of his quality. Not only that, he also set up the winner for Axel Witsel with a lovely free-kick into the box in the 87th minute.
Julian Brandt (N/R)
Brandt wasn’t able to get as involved as he would have liked after coming off the bench.
