Bayern Munich thrash Union Berlin to put pressure back on Borussia Dortmund in Bundesliga title race
Bayern Munich issued a strong statement in the Bundesliga title race on Saturday evening, as they claimed a 4-0 win over Union Berlin to put the pressure back on Borussia Dortmund.
Having offered Borussia Dortmund with a route back into the title race following two straight draws in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich were in desperate need of a response. And they delivered exactly that on Saturday evening by cruising to a 4-0 win over Union Berlin.
Kingsley Coman opened the scoring for Bayern Munich, before Tanguy Nianzou headed home the second. Robert Lewandowski then scored either side of half-time to secure a thumping win for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Union Berlin had a number of decent chances to score in the first half, but a lack of clinical edge in front of goal meant that they weren’t able to get on the scoresheet.
Bayern Munich’s win over Union Berlin means that Borussia Dortmund will now need to beat FC Köln away from home to close the gap at the top back to four points.
The Black and Yellows have a good recent record against the Billy Goats, but Steffen Baumgart’s side are enjoying an impressive season in the Bundesliga and are currently seventh in the table. So Dortmund could be in for a hard fought contest in front of 50,000 fans at the RheinEnergieSTADION on Sunday evening.
A win for Borussia Dortmund on Sunday would certainly make for an exciting title run-in in the Bundesliga. Bayern are still the overwhelming favourites to win the Bundesliga title. But if the Black and Yellows can keep piling on the wins, they can certainly heap some pressure back on their rivals.
Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are due to meet at the Allianz Arena on April 23. And that could well end up being the decisive fixture in this title race.
