Bundesliga Roundup: Bayern extend lead at the top; Stuttgart claim stunning comeback win
Matchday 27 of the Bundesliga season saw Bayern Munich take another big step in their bid to win the Bundesliga title. While Stuttgart enjoyed a massive win in the relegation battle.
Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings to six points as they cruised to a 4-0 win over Union Berlin. Goals from Kingsley Coman, Tanguy Nianzou and Robert Lewandowski (x2) sealed a big win for the defending champions.
Borussia Dortmund could only manage a 1-1 draw away to FC Köln, with Sebastian Andersson canceling out Marius Wolf’s early opener. The Black and Yellows are now all but out of the title race with just seven games left in the season.
VfB Stuttgart came from behind and beat FC Augsburg 3-2 to boost their chances of avoiding relegation from the Bundesliga. Augsburg took the lead twice through Andre Hahn and Michael Gregoritsch. But Waldemar Anton and Omar Marmoush got Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side back on level terms.
Tiago Tomas then scored an 85th minute winner to help Stuttgart climb up to 14th place in the Bundesliga standings.
Hertha Berlin registered their first win of 2022 as they beat TSG Hoffenheim 3-0 in Felix Magath’s first game in charge. Goals from Niklas Stark, Ishak Belfodil and Lucas Tousart lifted the Berliners up to 16th place in the Bundesliga table.
Bayer Leverkusen ended a disappointing week on a high as they beat Wolfsburg 2-0 thanks to a late brace from Paulinho. While fourth placed RB Leipzig were held to a goalless draw by Eintracht Frankfurt.
SC Freiburg also failed to get on the scoresheet, as they played out a goalless draw with bottom club SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Christian Streich’s side remain fifth in the table, only behind RB Leipzig on goal difference.
Jonathan Burkardt scored a brace as Mainz 05 thrashed Arminia Bielefeld 4-0. Moussa Niakhate and Marcus Ingvartsen were also on target for the 05ers, who were awarded three penalties over the course of the 90 minutes.
Borussia Mönchengladbach’s clash against VfL Bochum was abandoned in the second half after an assistant referee was hit by a beer thrown from the crowd. Gladbach were leading 2-0 when the game was called off.
