Nico Schlotterbeck has hinted that he could leave SC Freiburg in the summer, amid rumours linking him with a move to Borussia Dortmund.

Nico Schlotterbeck is enjoying an impressive breakthrough campaign with SC Freiburg, and has established himself as one of the best young defenders in Europe this season. His performances have also seen him attract the interest of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. And the Black and Yellows are especially keen on signing him this summer as they look to bolster their defence.

The 22 year old has now admitted that there is a good chance of him leaving SC Freiburg this summer. But he would also be open to staying if he feels that he can develop more at SC Freiburg. In an interview with Sport1, Schlotterbeck said:

"“I’m not thinking about my future at the moment,” Schlotterbeck said. “I want to finish the season well at Freiburg. The higher we are in the table at the end, the better. We also have a great chance to win the DFB-Pokal. I’m concentrating fully on the club.”“Of course, there’s a possibility that I might leave in the summer. A transfer is quite possible, but nothing has been decided yet. We will sit down together after the end of the season. If I feel that I can still improve at Freiburg, then I’ll stay.”"

With Manuel Akanji looking increasingly likely to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer, chances are that Sebastian Kehl and co. will look to bring in a new central defender. The future of Dan-Axel Zagadou is also uncertain, with his contract set to expire in the summer.

Schlotterbeck is thought to be Dortmund’s preferred target for defence, and it is no surprise considering how good he has been this season. Freiburg boast the second best defence in the Bundesliga this season. And Schlotterbeck has been one of the main reasons behind the defensive prowess of Christian Streich’s side.

Borussia Dortmund have already completed the signing of Niklas Süle ahead of next season. The Bayern Munich centre-back will arrive on a free transfer, and BVB fans will be hoping that Schlotterbeck can join him in the summer.
