Gio Reyna and the United States men’s national team all but secured their place in this year’s FIFA World Cup by claiming a 5-1 win over Panama on Sunday evening.
Former Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic scored a hat-trick on Sunday evening to put the United States men’s national team on the brink of World Cup qualification. Gio Reyna and the USMNT delivered a ruthless performance against Panama and cruised to a 5-1 win to put themselves in an almost unassailable position in the Concacaf Hexagonal standings.
Pulisic scored two first-half penalties before completing his maiden international hat-trick in the second half. Paul Arriola and Jesus Ferreira were also on target for the USMNT, who cruised to a four goal lead in the first half.
Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Gio Reyna came off the bench at half-time and helped his national team see out a memorable win.
The win over Panama lifted the USMNT up to second place in the Concacaf Hexagonal standings. Gregg Berhalter’s side are three points clear of fourth placed Costa Rica with one game left in the qualifying round.
And the USMNT’s superior goal difference means that they will secure their World Cup berth as long as they manage to avoid losing to Costa Rica by six or more goals in their final qualifying match on Wednesday.
First placed Canada secured their place in this year’s FIFA World Cup on Sunday. While Mexico, who are currently third, are level on points with the USMNT and will automatically qualify if they manage to get a point against El Salvador on Wednesday.
