Careless Borussia Dortmund suffer embarrassing 1-4 defeat at home to RB Leipzig

Borussia Dortmund were handed a stark reality check on Saturday as they suffered a 1-4 defeat at home to RB Leipzig.
A game so heavily hyped up for the return of 81,000+ fans to the Westfalenstadion ended in misery and disappointment for Borussia Dortmund as they fell to a 1-4 defeat at home to RB Leipzig. It was an abject performance from the Black and Yellows, who were quite easily outplayed and outworked by Domenico Tedesco’s side.
Leipzig delivered an emphatic statement win at the expense of Borussia Dortmund, led by goals from Konrad Laimer (x2), Christopher Nkunku and Dani Olmo. The result showed once again that Marco Rose and his side have plenty of work to do if they are to have any chance of catching Bayern Munich next season.
Borussia Dortmund dominated the game right from the start, but did not create any real chances aside from a strong 15 minute spell early on. They should have taken the lead in the 7th minute after Mats Hummels found Marco Reus in a great position with a lovely long ball. But instead of going for the shot, Reus decided to look for Haaland only for his squared pass to land behind the striker.
Haaland had a chance of his own soon after, but he fired his shot just wide following a mistake from Mohamed Simakan.
Leipzig stunned the 81,365 fans inside the Signal Iduna Park in the 21st minute as they opened the scoring through Konrad Laimer after Emre Can clumsily gave the ball away inside the Dortmund half. Laimer then doubled his tally at the half hour mark with a shot that was deflected into the net off of Emre Can.
Any hopes of a second half Borussia Dortmund comeback eroded in the 57th minute, as Christopher Nkunku scored Leipzig’s third goal after a gorgeous back-heel from Laimer.
Dortmund toiled for the rest of the second half, looking to find a way past the Leipzig defence. And while Donyell Malen managed to pull a goal back late on, Dani Olmo responded immediately and restored Leipzig’s three goal lead.
RB Leipzig cruised to a 4-1 win in the end to close the gap to Dortmund to nine points. And based on how the two teams are going at the moment, it wouldn’t be a big surprise if Leipzig managed to catch Dortmund before the end of the season.
