Borussia Dortmund suffered a 4-1 defeat against RB Leipzig at the Westfalenstadion on Saturday in front of the first sold out stadium since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Borussia Dortmund’s clash against RB Leipzig on Saturday was meant to be a fresh start for the club. The buildup to the match was exciting. Games against Leipzig have become big fixtures in the Bundesliga, at least in terms of their significance competitively. Leipzig’s meteoric rise in the Bundesliga since achieving promotion has been substantial, putting them up there as one of the stronger sides in the league, so the game itself was always going to be an exciting affair.

The Leipzig game was also the first time Borussia Dortmund would play at home in front of a sold out crowd since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The culmination of an exciting match and an electric atmosphere of 80,000+ fans should have led to a proper spectacle.

Unfortunately for those of a Dortmund inclination, the matchday did not live up to the excitement. Borussia Dortmund played host to a game that saw Leipzig put four past them. Leipzig’s path to victory was paved by a menagerie of circumstances brought to fruition by factors mostly in the control of the Dortmund players on the pitch. What looked like a promising start took a turn for the worse quite quickly, with the team losing another game not because of the quality of the opposition, but because of individual mistakes and overall disjointed play. Lets take a look at some of the talking points from this sobering result.
