Manuel Akanji has said that he is fully focused on Borussia Dortmund at the moment, and is not thinking about his future beyond the end of the season.

There has been plenty of speculation regarding Manuel Akanji’s future in recent weeks, with reports claiming that Manchester United are interested in signing him. The Swiss international’s contract expires at the end of next season, and chances are that he could leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

Akanji was asked about his Borussia Dortmund future following the 1-4 defeat to RB Leipzig on Saturday. And while the defender said that he is happy in Dortmund, he refused to confirm whether he will stay at the club beyond the end of the season.

"“I am fully focused on Dortmund at the moment,” Akanji said as quoted by Kicker. “We will see what happens in the future. I’m totally happy to play in this team. I think I have an important role and I want to perform until the end. And then we’ll see in the summer how things go.”"

It has been reported that Akanji, who joined Borussia Dortmund from FC Basel in January 2018, is looking for a new challenge. That new challenge could be a move to the English Premier League. The 26 year old is being linked with a move to Manchester United, and more clubs could also join the race for his signature.

Akanji is enjoying arguably the best season of his Borussia Dortmund career. He has made 30 appearances for the Black and Yellows so far this season, and was one of the team’s top performers during the hinrunde.

Borussia Dortmund reportedly want a transfer fee in the region of 30 million euros for Akanji. They are said to be eyeing Nico Schlotterbeck as a potential replacement for him. The SC Freiburg centre-back is also attracting the interest of Bayern Munich.
