Roman Bürki has said that he is proud to have spent seven years at Borussia Dortmund, despite losing his spot as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper last season.

Roman Bürki’s time at Borussia Dortmund will come to an end in the summer, with the goalkeeper set to join newly formed MLS franchise St. Louis City SC. The former number one’s departure will mark the end of a seven year spell that was full of highs and lows. For Bürki, spending seven years with the Black and Yellows have been the highlight of his career.

In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten, the 31 year old said:

"“I am definitely proud of it! Borussia Dortmund is a top club in Europe, BVB is world-famous. The seven years that I have spent here are certainly the highlight of my career.”“I won the DFB Cup twice. I was able to celebrate at Borsigplatz with the fans. I played in front of a sold-out crowd most of the time, here at home. I’ll remember all of that in a positive way.”"

Bürki joined Borussia Dortmund from SC Freiburg in 2015 and quickly became the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. But after a string of below par performances, he lost his spot in the team last season and hasn’t played since May.

The former Switzerland international has now admitted that the situation was very difficult for him. But the support of his Borussia Dortmund teammates helped him get through this period.

"“I came back from vacation and was no longer number 1, but number 38. This situation was difficult for me.”“I gave it my all, but it didn’t lead to any real opportunities. I had to learn to free myself from this constant pressure. Because I still have a good relationship with everyone here, the fun came back. I always behaved professionally, I could train at any time. My teammates and the support staff have played a big part in keeping me positive and in really great shape.”"

Bürki will be hoping to make a fresh start next season with his move to MLS franchise St. Louis City SC. He is looking forward to playing once again, and believes that it is a very exciting opportunity for him.

"“When the request came, I really wanted to take a look. I think it’s a cool, exciting opportunity to help build something completely new from the ground up in St. Louis. That’s why I decided to do it.”"

But before his move to the MLS, Roman Bürki wants to add to his 232 appearances for Borussia Dortmund. He hopes to get a few minutes on the pitch at the end of the season so he can say goodbye to the team and the fans who have supported him.
