Injury woes continue to plague Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund’s Gio Reyna can’t seem to catch a break this season. The US International has had a tough time with injuries this season. The American has been limited to just 10 appearances in the league in a season where he was expected to make the next step and become a central figure for his side.

Reyna’s injury woes are indicative of a greater issue in Dortmund, one which has often been talked about at length. The club almost always has a retinue of players out injured. These injuries also seem to recur very frequently. Aside from Reyna, the likes of Dan-Axel Zagadou, Nico Schulz and Raphaël Guerreiro are further examples of players who continue to fall prey to conditions that keep them from playing a major role for Dortmund. Even Erling Haaland has found himself sidelined for long stints this season, which makes one think that there is a further underlying issue causing these problems that doesn’t simply include “bad luck”.

The injuries have meant that the focus has been on papering over the cracks and maintaining a level of squad stability. Many players have been asked to play out of position to help cope with the never ending surge of fitness-misfortune, which hasn’t helped to put together a coherent starting 11.

It would seem that Gio Reyna’s season may have come to a premature end due to this most recent setback, with the US international suffering a muscle and tendon injury. One can only hope that Gio has a swift recovery that sees him come back stronger and injury free in the long run.
