Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in this season’s final iteration of the clash between Germany’s two most prominent sides.

Bayern Munich clinched their 10th straight Bundesliga title this past weekend as they faced their closest competitors Borussia Dortmund in “Der Klassiker“. The scoreline itself doesn’t speak of a close game but Die Schwarzgelben did go through phases where they piled on the pressure and made the Bavarian giants uncomfortable.

Borussia Dortmund’s loss to Bayern Munich was symptomatic of the same issues the club has faced all season; Injury woes, defensive mistakes and a lack of clinical precision in decisive moments. While it would be easy to harp on the same concerns that have been voiced over and over again for some time now, there were positive signs in the team’s gameplay that deserve highlighting, as well as decisions made by officials that altered the course of the game.

While the result itself is rather disappointing, games against Bayern often act as a good barometer for where the club stands in terms of their chances to compete for future silverware.

Of course, there is far more that comes into play when competing for the Bundesliga title, such as consistency and the ability to win games when not at one’s best. But being able to compete with the Rekordmeister is an important quality to have, as Bayern themselves have mastered the art of being consistent, even when they are not at their strongest.

It is important for the club then to take the positives from their performance and build on them. So let’s take a look at some of the key takeaways that can possibly breed a semblance of hope for the season(s) to come.
